I believe if not all but most Nigerians are familiar with the word “Supaghetti”. Most people don’t know this but that pronunciation is very wrong. Many people are used to that pronunciation of the word “Spaghetti” because it’s how we grew up listening to our parents pronounce it.

There is no letter ‘U’ between ‘S’ and ‘P’ for it to be pronounced “Supaghetti”. The actual pronunciation of the word is “Spaghetti” which is faster and smoother. Spaghetti is a pasta that is widely loved by many individuals because it’s delicious and very easy to cook. Below is a list of words we likely mispronounce everyday.

1. Plumber is pronounced “Plummer” (The letter ‘M’ is silent)

2. Google is the correct pronunciation not “Gogu”

3. Tortis is the correct pronouciation not “Tortoise” (The letter ‘O’ is silent)

4. Ball’e is the correct pronouciation not “Ballet” (The last letter ‘T’ is silent)

5. Wenzday is the correct pronouciation not “Wednezday” (The letter ‘D’ and the fifth letter ‘E’ are silent)

However, a recent study shows that most people mispronounce words because of tribal accent and lack of exposure. Despite the fact that many individuals now know the real pronunciation of the word “Supaghetti”, they still find it very difficult to use the correct pronunciation which is “Spaghetti”.

Apart from Spaghetti, there are other words Nigerians seems to mispronounce every day. For example, most people say “Okro” but the real pronunciation is “Okra”. The most ridiculous one is Nigerians generalizing every noodle as “Indomie”. We can always improve our vocabulary by reading books.
