Bedbugs are tiny, oval, brownish insects that live on animal or human blood. Adult: Adult

Bedbugs have flat bodies of an apple seed about the size. However, their bodies swell after feeding, and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs don’t fly, but they can move over floors , walls and ceilings quickly. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs over the course of a lifetime, each about the size of a speck of dust.

Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before they reach maturity, and require a blood meal before each shed. The bugs can develop fully in as little as a month under favorable conditions, and produce three or more generations per year.

Although they are a nuisance, they are not thought to transmit diseases.

Where Bed Bugs Hide

Using luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items, Bedbugs can enter your home undetected Their flattened bodies allow them to fit in tiny spaces, about a credit card ‘s width. Bedbugs don’t have nests such as ants or bees but tend to live in hiding places in groups. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where people can easily get to bite in the evening.

They may scatter through the bedroom over time, however, moving into any crevice or protected place. They may also spread out to rooms or apartments nearby.

Because bedbugs live on blood only, having them in your home isn’t a sign of dirt. They ‘re just as likely to be found in immaculate homes and hotel rooms as in filthy ones.

When Bedbugs Bite

Bedbugs are predominantly active at night, and usually bite people while they sleep. They feed by piercing the skin through an elongated beak and withdrawing blood. The bugs feed up to get engorged for three to 10 minutes and then crawl away unnoticed.

At first, most bedbug bites are painless but later become itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mostly around ankles, bedbug bites are exposed while sleeping on any area of the skin. The bites also don’t have a red spot in the center as do flea bites.

People who do not realize they are infested with a bedbug can attribute itching and welts to other causes, such as mosquitoes. To confirm bedbug bites, you must find and identify the bugs themselves.

Signs of Infestation

If you’re waking up with itchy areas you didn’t have when you went to sleep, you might have bedbugs, especially if you’ve got a used bed or other used furniture around the time the bites start. Other signs you have about bedbugs include:

Flecks of blood on your sheets or cushions

Dark or rusty bedbug spots excrete on sheets and mattresses, bedding and walls

Bedbug fecal spots, egg shells or skins shed in areas where bedbugs are hiding

An offensive, musty smell from the aromatic glands of the bugs

If you suspect an infestation, remove any bedding and carefully check for signs of the bugs or their excretion. Remove the dust cover over the box springs at the bottom and examine the seams in the wood framing. Peel back the fabric onto the wood frame where it is stapled.

Also, check the area around the bed, including books inside, telephones or radios, the edge of the carpet, and even in electrical outlets. Check your closet, because clothing can be attached to the bedbugs. If you are unsure about bedbug signs, call an exterminator who will know what to look for.

If you find signs of infestation, begin steps to get rid of the bugs and prevent their return.

Bedbug Treatments

To get rid of bedbugs starts by cleaning up the places where bedbugs live. That should contain the following:

In hot water, clean bedding, linens, curtains and clothing and dry them in the highest dryer setting. Place stuffed animals, shoes, and other items that can not be washed in the dryer and 30 minutes run on high.

Use a stiff brush to scrub mattress seams before vacuuming, to remove bedbugs and their eggs.

Vacuum often from your bed and surrounding area. Place the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag immediately after vacuuming, and place it in garbage outdoors.

Encase mattress and box springs with a densely woven, zippered cover to prevent the entry or escape of bedbugs. Bedbugs can live up to one year without feeding, so keep the cover on your mattress for at least one year to ensure that all mattress bugs are dead.

Repair plaster cracks and glue the peeling wallpaper down to get rid of places where bedbugs can hide.

Get rid of the hoarseness around the bed.

If your mattress gets infested, you may want to get rid of it and get a new one, but be careful to get rid of bedbugs in the rest of your home or they will infest your new mattress.

Bedbug Extermination

While cleaning up infested areas will help in controlling bedbugs, usually eliminating them requires chemical treatments. Because insecticides can be harmful to your bed and bedroom, it ‘s important to use products that can be used safely in bedrooms. Do not treat the bedding and mattresses unless specifically stated by the label that you can use them on bedding.

Hiring an experienced pest control professional for bedbug extermination is generally the safest and most efficient.
