Edo Poll: Group Petitions Buhari, Raises Fear Over Health Implications In Direct Primaries

Buhari

BENIN – Edo Unity League has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over the insistence of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to force members in Edo State to nominate their governorship candidate through the direct primary election.

Comrade Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo, National Coordinator, Edo Unity League, while addressing journalists in Benin City, said the league was putting Mr. President on notice following the tension being generated in the state by the preference of direct primaries of the APC NWC.

Edokpolo told Mr. President that no responsible Edo group would fold its hand or bask in the self-deluding euphoria of-all-is-well, when such a proposed activity had potentials of complicating health and social security challenges on the ground.

According to him, the reality on the ground was that all had not been well with Edo State since the direct primaries was rumoured, judging by the ravaging toll of COVID-19 pandemic.

“Edo Unity League has therefore resolved to unequivocally echo that voice of the majority of Edo people, (APC members inclusive) against the proposal for direct mode o gubernatorial primaries.

“If it is possible for APC members to vote online or through the virtual meeting, we would have welcomed it, the most result-oriented and social distance compliant mode is the indirect primaries methodology,” the league said.
