You Are Mine Forever: Funmi & Abi’s Fun And Quirky Wedding

Funmi and Abi’s wedding is a fun and quirky one as the couple had a lovely destination wedding that beautifully reflect their personality. The opening image here gives the phrase “dashing groom” a whole new meaning in these innovative and unusual DIY wedding photos. The wedding venue plays a key role in these portraits: not only the fun “reveal” shot of the groom happily looking into his bride’s eyes every moment but some gorgeous silhouettes of the happy couple, with sunshine in the background and city lights as magical complements later in the evening. The bride is radiant in a strapless gown with delicate beadwork and embroidery over all, and her maids are equally pretty in blush pink dresses. We absolutely enjoyed reading their beautiful love story, hope you do as well! Enjoy

We went to university and had a lot of mutual friends including my best friend who did the same course as Abi (Computer Science) however we did not meet until the middle of our second year (at Hertfordshire University) and were pretty much inseparable after that. We went on a couple’s holiday a few years ago to Budapest and on the second to last night we were in our bedroom discussing getting married and talking about my younger sister being a bridesmaids. I was putting on my make up in the bathroom and said something along the lines of “we haven’t discussed her being a bridesmaid as we are not engaged” and as I walked back into the bedroom he said “well what would you do if I asked you to marry me?” and I turned around and he was on his knee with the ring box in his hand. I was speechless for what felt like an hour but I am sure was only a minute. I said yes and ran into the adjoining rooms where our friends were staying and we all went out for dinner that night to celebrate. We have had two times in our relationship where we have been long distance, one where I (Funmi) moved to Staffordshire to go to University for my Teacher Training and more recently the year before we got married where I moved to Dubai and Abi stayed in the UK. We lived apart for a 14 months (with frequent holidays between both countries) until Abi moved to Dubai two months before the wedding.

We had always loved the idea of having caricatures or a caricaturist play a role in our wedding however Christmas in Dubai is the worst time to try and find someone so during the summer we decided to have caricatures that would double up as favours. I contacted a caricaturist in the UK after getting every single guest to send us their pictures and basically commissioned him to draw a 6 x 4 caricature for each guest, On the day guests had a seating plan which told them what table they were on however they had to go to the table and guess where their seat was by identifying their caricature. Guests loved this idea and said it was the best favour they had ever had. Again this was part of our ploy to enable people to enjoy their day, have fun memories of the night but also not be lumbered with favours they would not use

The pageboy held a sign as he walked down the aisle which read “Uncle Abi, here comes your bride” Vintage Array, Ebay

I wanted a bouquet that was different to others, I am not a huge fan of flowers so got a brooch bouquet made and tailored to the wedding colours. I also wanted something I could keep forever

During our ceremony (which we both pretty much wrote) we had a Candle lighting, our mothers are very important to us both so we got some candles made. One had a quote on it and both our names and date of the wedding we then had two single candles, one with my name and one with Abi’s. One the day both our mothers took the candle with their names child on it, lit them and then both use their single candles to light the middle pillar candle (which we kept burning most of the evening) and now sits in our apartment

My oldest friends Tope did a reading which she had written especially for us. I met Tope when I used to run as a teenager and so her reading had many athletic/ sports references throughout in relation to marriage, it was an amazing speech

We had personal touches throughout the day such as on our cake table we had our initials (which we spray painted Silver) and on our table we had a Mr & Mrs Sign (which was white with diamanté)

During dinner we had a surprise saxophonist play for all the guests.

Instead of signing a guest book we had our guests sign an A3 caricature of myself and Abi which was in a black frame. Our guests signed and wrote little messages around the frame for us, which we are hanging up and will be a constant memory of our day.

Another fun and quirky idea we included was the use of a photobooth after dinner, guests loved this as the props were tailored to our wedding and the photocards guests took home were specifically designed to have our names and date of the wedding.

We had monograms with our names and wedding date on which were stuck to the floor in the middle of the dancer floor and two with our names and ‘Love’ at the end of the aisle

A lot of the wedding was DIY (not because of the cost) but because we wanted it to be personal to our wedding e.g. we painted our 8 wooden table numbers

As the venue was at a Polo Club during pictures and the cocktail hour a polo match was playing.
